Research Paper Overview
Women in History
Due Date: TBA
Your child should have already chosen a famous woman in history and have done quite a bit of research on that person. By Tuesday, March 25 th, I have asked the students to bring in information that gives the background of their woman. These are the parts on which this paper is graded. Points will be given on:
Cover page 5 pts
Title Page 5 pts
4 Paragraph Body 75pts
Bibliography 10pts
Illustrations 10 pts
In-Class Participation 20 pts
Total 125 pts
Cover Page:
This is the very front page of the paper. On this page, it should have the name of the peacemaker and an image of the peacemaker or one that represents them. The cover should have at least one illustrated picture (by the student) and one image they downloaded from the Internet.
Title Page:
This page will have the Title, the author(your child), and the date of this paper.
Body Paragraphs:
Paragraph One-Three- In these paragraphs, the students should write the biography of their selected woman, preferably in chronological order. It will be expected that this woman's greatest achievement will receive a paragraph of its own in order to fully develop the idea of her importance in history in writing. Students will use a four square writing model as well as a timeline to help organize information. Other graphic organizers may be used to support learning and understanding of your child's selected woman.
Paragraph Four - This paragraph should state the student's observation and opinion of how their woman has affected history. They should mention their opinion of her and the actions she did.
Bibliography:
This should record all of the sources that the students used to research this person. I encourage the use of different sources (i.e. book encyclopedia, internet websites, storybooks, movies, film clips, etc .) However, please guide your students AWAY from WIKIPEDIA since it is NOT a credible resource. Anyone can go in and change information on that website and quite a few people go in to put up incorrect information. Please use your best judgment in finding resources and check for the credibility of the site. Great search engines for kids are Yahooligans and Google Jr., but you still need to look at the websites to verify whether they are appropriate sources for your children. Don't forget to explain to your child why a particular website looks credible or not!
Illustrations:
The student is expected to supplement their information with illustrations and photographs. These pictures must be relevant and used as an aid to the writing.
Extra Information:
We will be creating supplemental materials that are related to this topic, but are meeting the curriculum demands of other subjects, such as Religion, Science, and Art. I will keep you informed on these projects are we get closer.
As with our last resource paper, all work is to be completed at school. This time we are using some graphic organizers to more concretely separate our information. There is no due date as of right now. I don't expect this paper to take quite as long as our last paper because we have had practice writing a paper! I will keep you updated with developments in my newsletter and on the class website.
I want to thank you for the support I have received on these papers. It is hard to let go and just let your child do the paper at school without much help from you at home. This is a process that is difficult and one that is imperative that they master so they have the ability to create high quality work in older grades without the same type of support from their teachers. Their instructors will be able to help them with problems that require Higher Order Thinking, instead of helping them on how to format a research paper. This class is so capable and has risen to the challenge I have set for them! You will be proud when you see their completed work, if you aren't proud already! Thank you!
FYI: Below is a bulleted checklist of items that are required in the research paper. This list has already been given to your children!

I know that some of you may be reading this and getting nervous about the due that was sent home last week. After reviewing my expectations, I am delaying the due date. We are also working on ALL writing in class, unless I send a note home saying otherwise. Your child will have a folder at school in which to keep all of their information. Please have your child bring in background information on Tuesday. If they would like to start collecting images, they may do this as well and keep it in their folder.
Book Report
I apologize that no guidelines were posted. The information for the two types of projects were on handouts that I took out of a book!
Informational Poster Project
Due Date: Tuesday October 30, 2007
Expectations:
Students will work with family to research some history on Halloween, All Saints Day, All Souls Day, Dia de Los Muertos, or a comparison of the two or three days. On the back side of this paper, you will find the grading rubric I will use. (We have covered the rubric in 3 rd grade appropriate language in class.)
Student will be prepared to tell us some interesting facts about what they learned.
Poster will have appropriate amount writing which conveys what they learned about this celebration. (I hesitate to put an amount. As you read the poster, put yourself in my place. Does the poster and does your child sound like they are conveying what they have actually learned about this celebration?)

Anything you want to use to decorate the Poster paper with
Resources for Sources:
