State Results 2002-2003

On April 12 and 13, in Richland, Washington, Assumption Catholic School students took part in the Elementary State Chess Championship Tournament, grades K-6. This is the biggest and the most prestigious chess event in the state of Washington. In order to participate in this event players had to qualify in one of the local tournaments by winning at least 3 out of 5 games. This year 750 players participated in the tournament. Assumption was represented by 12 students. The students representing Assumption were: Chad Castro, Jordan Castro, Mikayla Chang, Ryan Chang, Albert Goo, Albert Goo, Ben Kurtis, Drew Ronson, Fenton Rybka, Joe Solomon, Justin Vondfeldt and Thomas Witecki. Players earning indivdual awards were; Mikayla Chang, 23rd place 1st grade; Ben Kurtis, 29th place 3rd grade; and Thomas Witecki, State Champion, 4th grade. Team trophies were awarded in two categories K-3 and 4-6. Assumption players took 13th place in the K-3 group with 102 schools represented !! In the 4-6 category our team took 26th place out of 82 schools. Splendid work guys!

About the Team

        The Assumption Catholic School Chess Team meets every Friday after school in the library. The chess team is in its sixth year, and is a huge hit at Assumption. The chess team currently has more than 40 members in grades Kindergarten through 8th. The team members travel to tournaments regularly and attends the Washington State Elementary Championships each year. The Assumption Catholic School Chess Team is the current Elementary School Champions of Whatcom County. All members of the chess team are expected to do their homework and practice good chess etiquette at every opportunity. The chess team is coached by Peter Witecki and Ryan King. Our club is chaired by Angie King and Kathy Goo. The chess team enjoys continued support from parents and the Assumption Staff.
