First Grade News

This week our focus was on Advent, families and the Christmas Story.

Concepts covered this week
Religion:
· We discussed Advent and ways we can prepare our hearts for Jesus.
· We made pictures and shared ideas about things that bring us hope.
· We worked with our fourth grade buddies to make a special picture of the Nativity.

Language Arts:
· We practiced reading and writing short “o “ words.
· We looked at the naming part and the telling part of a sentence.
· We practiced finding a problem and a solution in fiction stories.
· We read and discussed stories about food and family.
· We reviewed rhyming words.
· We practiced reading for specific details.

Math:
· We solved simple subtraction problems using pictures and manipulatives.
· We made our own subtraction sentences with single digit numbers.

Social Studies:
· We began the Second Step program on empathy training. We focused on our feelings and the feelings of others.

Health and Fitness:
· We continued movement gymnastics – moving through stations that include tumbling, balance beam, rope climbing, mini vault, and bar challenges.

Music/ Computer Lab:
· We practiced singing our Christmas songs.
· We had no computer due to early release.

Art:
We used clay and paint to make a manger and baby Jesus
